25 Years of brotherhood, community service

Jesse Webb ’89 arrived at Western Carolina University in the fall of 1986 seeking to join Sigma Chi, his father’s fraternity. Without a chapter on campus, Webb launched an effort to start one. The local chapter, named Sigma Chi Alpha, gained momentum that fall. With the hard work of countless brothers and the fortuitous meeting in September 1990 of University of Kentucky Sigma Chi brother Henry Durham and wife Jo of Highlands, who would become longtime friends and supporters of WCU, the chapter was installed Nov. 16, 1991. The charter was presented that evening at a banquet at the Waynesville Country Club, followed by a celebration that included several thousand back in Cullowhee. Sixty-four men were initiated that day; the chapter will induct its 350th member this fall.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of being chartered and the 30th anniversary of the formation of the local chapter, the Kappa Gamma Chapter of Sigma Chi will host a reunion the weekend of Nov. 11-12. Events will kick off Friday evening with a social at the Sigma Chi house. Saturday will include a hike led by Base Camp Cullowhee, a barbecue in the afternoon and a dinner banquet that evening. Saturday evening’s entertainment will be provided by the Bobby Sullivan Trio, a local classic rock favorite.
