WCU group wins international fraternity’s top alumni association award

In its first year of existence, Western Carolina University’s Zeta Xi Alumni Association of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity is the recipient of the 2012 William R. Nester Alumni Association of the Year Award in recognition of the group’s philanthropic activities and high level of involvement in campus events.

The award, presented at the 2012 Pi Kappa Alpha International Convention held in Denver, is given annually to a group that represents the top 10 percent of the more than 150 chartered alumni associations of the national Pi Kappa Alpha organization, said Jerry Matheny ’70, secretary of the Zeta Xi Alumni Association.

Among the accomplishments for which the WCU chapter was recognized was donating more than $50,000 in money, materials and time for improvements to the fraternity house; providing funds for four scholarships that offer more than $3,000 in assistance to undergraduate students; involvement in eight major events held throughout the year that draw more than 200 guests for activities such as reunions, Homecoming weekend and volunteer projects; a vibrant website and strong presence in social media; and regular submissions to the fraternal organization’s international newsletter.
