Stars rise at ‘Dancing with the Catamounts’

After 10 weeks teaching faculty and staff members dance routines in styles from cha-cha to clogging for an event styled after the television show “Dancing with the Stars,” the efforts of students serving as “dance professionals” paid off. The “Dancing with the Catamounts” competition not only was a hit with the fans who packed the house at Hoey Auditorium but also reeled in $1,400 for scholarships, guest artists and dance performances.

Tying in the Judges Choice Award were Susan Belcher, wife of Chancellor David Belcher, and student Peter O’Neal, who performed East Coast swing, and Melody Huddleston and Amy Johnson, administrative assistants from the School of Stage and Screen, who danced with students Andrew Drake and Tevin Henderson. The latter group also won the Audience Choice Award for their hip-hop routine “Office Fun.”

“Everyone had a great time,” said Karyn Tomczak, artistic director for the event and director of the WCU Dance Program.
