2000

Dr. Brenna Michelle Farmer married Dr. Jason Chu in December at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Farmer, who earned her medical degree from East Carolina University, is an emergency medicine physician and medical toxicologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.

Carl Mummert, a member of the first graduating class of the WCU Honors College, was honored recently as a distinguished alumnus by the WCU College of Arts and Sciences. A researcher in the field of mathematical logic, Mummert is the author of nine publications and co-authored a book on Latin squares published by the American Mathematical Society that is used as a textbook at WCU. A resident of Huntington, W.Va., he currently holds a tenure-track position in the mathematics department at Marshall University.

Paxton Myers joined the National Indian Gaming Commission as chief of staff in August. Myers lives in Washington.

2003

Mary Margaret Smith is a legislative writer/congressional affairs specialist in the U.S. Office of Compliance.

2004

Wade Livingston MEd ’06, who earned a doctorate in 2009 from Clemson University, is an assistant professor in the Department of Leadership, Counselor Education, and Human & Organizational Development at Clemson University.

Jim McCabe is an intelligence analyst with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Kendra Turner MPA ’06 was named among the “10 Women You Should Know in Asheville” as part of WOXL-FM Mix 96.5’s Women’s Expo. Turner is on special assignment through the Asheville City Manager’s Office to spend a year developing a training and development program that includes ethics, diversity and customer service training. Previously, she served as executive assistant to the city manager and primary staff support for City Council.

2005

Mike Blackmon is a law student at Howard University in Washington.

Andrew MacRae is a telecommunications policy analyst at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

2006

Bryan Edwards MHS ’10 is operations manager for the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency. Edwards joined the agency in 1999 as a paramedic and moved into his new role after serving as crew chief, field training officer and operations supervisor.

Carrie Vickery is associate attorney with Walter C. Holton Jr. PLLC in Winston-Salem.

2007

Tonya Carroll MA ’09, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, was crowned Miss Cherokee in October. Carroll, of the Birdtown community, is outreach coordinator for the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual. Contestants competed in casual dress and traditional dress, and each spoke on a topic of her choosing. Carroll spoke about what it means to be Cherokee and, for her talent, performed the buffalo dance.

Christopher Douglas works for the Veterans Administration in hospital administration in Augusta, Maine, and is completing an MBA program with a human resources concentration at Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.

Jessica Cregger Ross is the non-work study student employment coordinator in WCU’s Office of Career Services.

2008

College friends Michael Klatt and Patrick Willse have launched Umbrella Tree Records in Asheville, a label for alternative, eclectic and punk artists in Western North Carolina. The name Umbrella Tree “comes from our old hangout spot back in college,” Willse said. The label released its first CD, “Natural Selections: Sounds of Asheville’s Indie Underground,” in December.

Ashley Reber is in service through Church of the Brethren as a volunteer at San Antonio Catholic Worker House in San Antonio, a stop for homeless families, many of whom are refugees from Central America.

2010

Ryan Barnhardt is a retail account manager with the tobacco company Liggett Vector Brands Inc.

Todd Beane MSA is assistant principal of East Montgomery High School.

Tim Hines was a regional field organizer for U.S. congressional candidate Carol Shea-Porter in New Hampshire.

Michael Lomuscio MS joined Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, an independent college preparatory boarding and day school for grades six through 12 in Rabun Gap, Ga., as a math teacher in the 2010-11 school year.
